February 14, 2016
On the 12th of February, it was announced that Lionel Messi won La Liga Player of the Month award for January. This is the first time that Messi has won this award, spurring from his incredible performance during January. Throughout January, Messi had six goals in six league games and even had a hat trick against Granada. The last Liga Player of the Month award that was won by a player from FC Barcelona was in November 2015; Neymar was awarded the honor. Barcelona now has a total of two club awards, which is behind Atlético Madrid holding six Player of the Month Awards. La Liga represents the top professional association football division of the Spanish Football League System. There are currently 20 teams in this league and Barcelona comes in second with the amount of championship wins with 23, behind Real Madrid, which has 32. Overall, this is an incredible accomplishment for Messi marking his first award hopefully out of many.
Do you feel that Messi was deserving of this award? Are you surprised Messi just won the award for the first time even though he is known as one of the best football players in the world? Relating this post to another one of our posts about Messi not being able to play in the 2016 olympics, do you feel that since he is performing so well, the Argentinian coach regrets his decision?

When I first saw the news that Diego Godin had won the award for a second time, I will admit, I was shocked to find out that Messi had never won it. But then, let me ask you this, if you are consistently doing the same performance week in week out, you are not doing anything uniquely special. If you actually read the requirements for the La Liga player of the month (google translate to the rescue!) you will see it talks about going beyond consistent standards.
ReplyDeleteI was pretty surprised to see that Messi had never won the award before. Although he did not specifically go beyond consistent standards, a player of his caliber deserves to win an award like this, especially after the month he had.
ReplyDeleteI agree with the above two comments, pretty surprising that Messi has never won the award before or even that FC Barcelona has only been awarded two club awards. But it's great to see talented athletes being awarded these prestigious awards. I have a feeling that FC Barcelona will only continue to grow in terms of award recognition. - Daniel Dzhurayev
