Recently, CNN contributor Chris Murphy wrote a piece questioning whether Messi and Roanldo should come play for the US soccer teams. Supposedly, top-notch MLS stars such as Frank Lampard, and Steven Gerrard and the likes are encoring these two European super starts to seriously consider coming to play for the MLS. Yes their playing skills would be remarkable for the MLS, however the article goes into detail on the real reason they should consider playing which is the Hollywood super-star status. This is interesting for such skilled players who would quite possibly leave behind playing for some of the best organization in the world, purely to claim their "hollywood" status. In Ronaldo's case, he is a spotlight loving star who has rumored to date some of hollywoods top celebrities. It seems he would be more fitting for the spotlight than Messi would be. Ronaldo has even hinted at ending his career stateside. It is interesting to think about the possibilities that these two stars would bring to the MLS and how it would increase their franchise. Messi on the other hand has never hinted at leaving the Euro league to play stateside, however Brazilian player Kaka thinks that there is a high chance Messi will also end up playing for the MLS.
What do you think the chances that both players will play in the MLS are?
Do you think that having Messi or Ronaldo coming to the states will increase European presence in the MLS?

As an avid US soccer and MLS fan, I would love to see both of these stars make their ways towards U.S. soil. However, both of these stars are well in there prime and will continue to play for top European clubs for several more years before the possibility of an American transfer. Furthermore, I do not think that neither Messi or Ronaldo would like to raise their sons in the United States. Rather, they would prefer their child to grow up in Spain or in their home countries. Obviously, if these stars came over to the MLS, every person in the world would think of the league with more prestige and players would want to compete against the legends.

ReplyDeleteIt is interesting to think if they will end up state side. While it would be great to have such talented players in the US it is still curious to think if they will ever make the venture. After recently watching the documentary "Ronaldo", I am a little uncertain if he will make the transfer. Ronaldo wants to be the best every year, playing each season as great as the last or better. Once unable to meet this, he said his career is then over. I am not sure if he would settle for a less competitive league.

I thin Messi will end up in Argentina for his final stint in football, so I do not think we will see him playing in the MLS. Ronaldo on the other hand may end up at Miami FC with Beckham both a United and Real Madrid former player. I say we will all be in our mid twenties by that time though, so don't hold your breathe.

ReplyDeleteIn any instance the only chance these two players come to America is at the end of their careers similar to Lampard and Gerard. Therefore, I don't know if it would increase young European soccer players to come to the MLS. In addition, I really only see Ronaldo coming to the U.S. since he loves the spotlight and would get to live the "hollywood" lifestyle. Messi doesn't seem to concern himself with the spotlight and tries to live a more low key lifestyle. In the end it would be great for the MLS if either of them did come but not sure how realistic it is.
