Will he have "Neymar" Money?

February 14, 2016

FC Barcelona star striker, Neymar, may be in major trouble regarding tax evasions in his hometown of Santos, Brazil.  Neymar, along with his father, are being prosecuted for tax evasion and for providing false information.  Allegedly, the father and son duo had forged several documents between 2006 and 2013 with the intentions of reducing the player’s income taxes in Brazil.  The money that they have supposedly put into the father’s account was from Neymar’s publicity works (images of him when he was playing for FC Santos).  The article states “Last week, a Sao Paolo judge rules that Neymar and his father would have to pay back nearly 103,000 Euros in taxes to the Brazilian authorities in a separate case relating to wrongdoing in 2007 and 2008.”  Clearly, Neymar is not new to legal troubles.

There are also details revolving around a 2011 negotiation to trade Neymar prior to his joining FC Barcelona in 2013.  And then last Tuesday; Neymar appeared in a Madrid court regarding irregularities with his 2013 signing.  Hopefully these legal battles will not continue for the young 23-year-old FC Barca striker.

As you read here, Neymar is involved in a few different legal scandals.  Do you think La Liga should have any input/punishment regarding Neymar if the prosecutions continue?

  1. As he is the number 3 best player in the world, I do not see him having troubles making money even if he losses this battle with the court system. Best of all, Spain does not send you to prison if your sentence is under 2 years, which most tax evasions will be. Just look at Mascherano.

  3. This is quite unfortunate, seeing as he makes an incredible amount of money. It shows his character and I think that the Spanish Govt needs to make an example of him by enforcing rules to pay them back especially in times like these where Spain is struggling. - Daniel Dzhurayev

  4. I think that Neymar should be treated like anyone else and pay back all of the money he owes and deal with the punishments, but famous athletes always seem to have a way to get out of these things. I don't think that he will go to jail or have many issues with all of his legal problems.

  5. While this is just an opinion, I have a feeling that these kind of sub-legal contract practices are much more prevalent in the futbol world than we even know of today. With Neymar becoming such a star in recent years, he has become a "better" target for both the Spanish and Brazilian governments to make an example out of. My other thought is the idea that opposing teams would be quick to turn any illegal practices over to authorities in order to complicate things for their opponents. For example, this seems like something that Barca and Real Madrid would have no regrets in doing, in the spirit of their competitive rivalry.

  6. Sometimes athletes get to a point where they think they are above everything. Neymar and even Messi in terms of tax purposes, have seemed to think they can escape a civil obligation that gives their countries the ability to sustain. They are not above the law and its almost selfish that they cannot pay what they owe with all the money they acquire each year.

  7. I think something that needs to be addressed is the agents that are representing players like Neymar. These are the people who are helping make financial decisions for the players. They know that the more money their clients can keep, the more money they can also keep. Agents prey on players with good intentions to give back and little education in finance. While agents would never come out and announce it, they are absolutely having an influence on the dodgy handling of finances among athletes.

  8. I find it absurd that athletes that are making more money than almost everyone in the world cannot complete actions that ever other citizen must complete. In this case, there is no reason that Neymar could not pay his taxes. It is insulting that someone of his stature can go through life thinking he is above everyone else just because he is a star/celebrity. It is interesting to think about this, though: many successful people who have money and not much free time hire others to handle their finances, such as taxes. Is it possibile that Neymar hired someone that had other intentions aside from filing Neymar’s taxes without Neymar knowing? We will find out once his case is concluded.
